抄録: In this paper we have discussed the theory of surface waves propagated upon elastic plates. In §2, SH waves are considered as the simplest model of surface waves, and the dispersion curves and formation of them are discussed. In §3, the characteristic equation of surface waves formed by P and SV waves is obtained. And in §4, the numerical calculation of the above equation was performed. In §5, the characteristic equation, when there exists some liquid on one side of the plate, is obtained, and some numerical calculations are done. In § 6, the above equation was expanded as a power series of ξ and its solution of the form b2=ΣAnξn was obtained. There are two branches, of which one (II0+) shows the nature of normal dispersion, while the other (II0-) disperses abnormally. In §7, we obtained the relation between phase velocity, group velocity, wave length and period using the results obtained in a previous article. In §8, we discussed the distribution of amplitudes, their ratio and the particle orbit by means of the calculation of §6 and §7. It became clear by the above discussion that II- branch is the bending motion of plates, while II+ branch is the elongation and contraction of them. Hitherto, we have only discussed the real roots of velocity equations, however when the sound velocity in the liquid part is small compared with that of the elastic part (b0>γ*), we must pay some attention to the existence of the branch II+, and consider also the complex roots so long as we are dealing with seismograms recorded near the origin.
