抄録: The Genroku tsunami (Dec. 31, 1703) attacked the south Kanto district and 2150 persons were drowned at the villages from Naruto to Ichinomiya along Kujukuri-hama, the open coast of Boso Peninsula. There are many old monuments, 13 or more, in a 30 km region along Kujukuri-hama. These monuments were built just after the tsunami generation to pray for the repose of the tsunami victims. It is said that many drowned people drifted around the monuments in the various villages. In the present paper, the monuments scattered along Kujukuri-hama are illustrated. Based on the descriptions on the monuments and other old documents, the behavior of the 1703 Genroku tsunami is discussed. The topography of the villages along Kujukuri-hama is largely flat. The elevation is 2 to 3 meters above the present sea-level. During the past 270 years, the beach along Kujukuri-hama has advanced 500-600 meters by littoral drift. Judging from the distribution of monuments, the inundated distance into the ground is about 3 km and the southern region is widely flooded. Inundation heights in the range of 5 to 6 meters are inferred. According to the descriptions on the monuments, many persons were drowned on low ground facing the rivers at the back of the villages. The Enpo tsunami (Nov. 4, 1677) also attacked the region from Iwanuma (Miyagi Prefecture) to the Boso Peninsula. There is one old monument at Torami (the southern end of Kujukuri-hama). According to old documents, the inundated area of the 1677 Enpo tsunami is narrower than that of the 1703 Genroku tsunami at southern Kujukuri-hama. The inundation height seems to be about 4 to 5 meters.
