抄録: YANAIHARA Tadao is an outstanding scholar of colonial policy after World War I in Japan. He is also a famous evangelist of Non-Churchism(Mukyōkai), a group of Christians advocated by UCHIMURA Kanzo in Japan. This article discusses the issue of the relation between his theory of colonization and Christianity. YANAIHARA formulated two concepts of colonization, formal(keishikiteki) and actual(jisshitsuteki) ones. Formal colonization means political control over colonies by states. On the other hand, actual colonization means socio-economic activities of social group which has moved into a new territory. He highly evaluated actual colonization because of his positive attitude toward civilizing influence of capital. YANAIHARA initially had an idea of countercolonization(gyaku-shokumin), which was formulated later by TOHATA Seiichi, to refer to the influence of the change of colonial society resulting from colonization back to the suzerain society itself. From what is discussed in this article, we can draw the following two conclusions. Firstly, YANAIHARA conceptualized actual colonization based on the idea of mission by laymen, not by Church, advocated by Non-Churchism(Mukyōkai). Secondly, YANAIHARA conceived an idea equivalent to countercolonization, inspired by the expression in St. Paul's Letter to the Romans, that is, the salvation of the Gentile eventually leads to the salvation of the Jew as the Chosen People.
