抄録: The primary aim of this paper is to explore communicative competence components in literature-based English teaching. Developing students'communication abilities has been one of the major goals of recent English education in Japan, and the number of literary texts has been gradually reduced. It is often pointed out that using literary texts may even be incompatible with developing communication abilities. To reconsider the relationship between "communication" and literary materials, this paper will first examine how the policy of communication-oriented teaching has been promoted in our country, and secondly it will discuss what "communication" means in the context of English and of foreign language classrooms. Subsequently, it will analyze three university English classes incorporating literary materials. The paper will finally suggest that the word "communication" has often been taken in too narrow a sense in English education policy in Japan, and that we can in fact find some beneficial factors to enforce learners'communicative competence in literature-based English teaching.
