抄録: This paper examines how the residents of a Cambodian outlying farm village create meaning regarding getting higher education, even when there is not enough progress in the industries to provide “good jobs” for a number of university graduates. By conducting researches in a farm village near Seam Reap, where the number of college students is increasing, and analyses of (1) the socioeconomic structure of the village (2) the village custom (3) talks with the village people, this paper discusses how logic of the inhabitants is created by those people who send their children to university. From what has been examined in the paper, we can draw the conclusion that one of the meanings the inhabitants attach to their children’s enrollments in college is that of being the way to avoid an “undesirable life”. In recent years in the farm village, especially from the end of 1990s, there has been a change in the way young people should fulfill their responsibilities. Under such circumstances, young people who attain reasonable education can be regarded as “lazy” people who don’t carry out their own responsibilities, even if they engage in farming or some other activities. In the village, inhabitants value higher education as a means to put off being considered “lazy” by others.
