抄録: Self-Respect Movement, which aimed at radical socio-religious reform in order to uplift lower strata of Non-Brahmins including the Depressed Classes, was affected by Communism and had strong relationship with Communist Movement. Communism propaganda by Self-Respecters was quite moderate in the meaning that its object of direct attack was vague and that illegal activity was carefully avoided. This “moderation” was intended firstly to attract support from various classes and communities and secondly to escape the suppression by the British Government. Self-Respecters succeeded in this attempt, and Communism was spread widely in South India in 1930ʼs in comparison with the other area of India where Communist organizations were declared illegal and suppressed. This article firstly describes the origin of Non-Brahmin Movement and the socio-political background of the commencement of Self-Respect Movement. Secondly it explicates the relation between Self-Respecters and Communists, and fi nally analyses the character of Communism propaganda by Self-Respecters and its socio-political impact.
