抄録: The Empire of the Mother provides one of the ideological meanings of womanhood in popular domestic literatures or child-rearing books during the ante-bellum America, gaining increasing interest in studies. The image showed paradoxical feminity, called "Woman's Sphere" in the era. This study focuses on the discourse of The Mother's Book, one of the popular child-rearing books, and on the discourse in letters written by Lydia Maria Child, the author of this book. It argues that the theme of this book comprises "mother's" important duties and attitudes on management, nurture and education of her child, especially the "daughter", and that the "mother" is advised to "govern" her "self". It also concludes that bringing up "daughters" is the problem in this period, and that the "mother" is the key concept of female life-courses. The discourse in Child's letters helps to clear this conclusion. Her self-consciousness of "individual freedom" is the way of solving ambivalence about her role as a woman and an activist, which says it would be possible that ordinary women in the period had such self-consciousness.
