抄録: In Old English, the surface order may be inverted when the complement of a preposition is a personal pronoun. When inverted with the preposition, the displaced personal pronoun complement may be either adjacent or non-adjacent to the preposition in question. In Kemenade (1987), these peculiar properties of the displaced personal pronoun complement are attributed to its clitic nature. According to the previous studies, the clitic nature of the displaced personal pronoun complement is lost sometime during the transition from Early Middle English to Late Middle English. Under the recent minimalist conceptions advocated by Chomsky (2000, 2001, 2004, 2004/2005, 2005) and the idea that language change is a reflex of the change in the process of parameter setting, it is claimed that the positional difference between the personal pronoun subject and the full nominal subject induces the clitic nature of personal pronouns, hence the displaced personal pronoun complement to prepositions, and that the obviation of the former causes the demise of the latter. This claim is supported by the fact that different modes of subject position asymmetry obviation (observed in Late Middle English dialects) result in the loss of clitic personal pronouns.
