抄録: (1)日本海岸から数十粁の距離に分布された島列の存在する事、此れに相当する島列が大平洋側には欫けて居る事実を指摘した。
(1) The existence of a conspicuous zone of islands fringing the Japan Sea coast of the main islands of Japan arid the absence of the corresponding one along the Pacific side are pointed out. (2) The frequency curve of the distances of these islands from the land is given and a regular occurrence of the frequency maxima is remarked. (3) A tentative interpretation of the phenomena is made under the light of the land-drift hypothesis. (4) The distributions of the basaltic rocks and the diatom earth in Japan are quoted and discussed with reference to the above hypothesis. (5) Further possible supports of the theory are given. (6) The examples of similar islands zones in the other parts of the earth are mentioned and a similar regularity in the frequency distribution of the distance from land is noted. To avoid any serious misunderstanding, it must be added that the discussions above made on the origin of the islands zone, based on the continental drift hypothesis, are merely of a tentative nature and ventured on the excuse that the hypothesis may possibly shed a new light on different problems concerning the geophysical past and future of this land. In concluding, the present author wishes to express his most cordial thanks to Profs. B. Koto, N. Yamasaki, T. Kato, S. Tsuboi and A. Matsumura for valuable instructions in those domains of sciences with which he is not familiar.
