A destructive earthquake struck the southern end of theIzu Peninsula and surrounding regjons on May 9, 1974. According to the data of the Japan Meteorological Agency, the origine time: 08h33m27.3s JST, the epicenter location: 34°34'N and 138°48'E, about 7 km off the coast of southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, central Honshu, the depth of focus: 10km, and the magnitude: 6.9. The total number of people killed and injured amounted to 102. The occurrence time at the Earthquake Research Institute, Tokyo (Φ=35°42'56''N, λ=139°45'47''E) was 08h33m52.1s, and at the Tsukuba Seismological Station (Φ=36°12'39''N, λ=140°06'36''E), situated 64km to the N29°E of the latter, was 08h34m01.0s JST. Initial motion at the Tsukuba Station showed an upward movement.
