内容記述 | Usu volcano, located on the northern island of Japan (Hokkaido) erupted on 31 March, 2000. Phreatic to phreato-magmatic eruptions occurred at two vent groups on the northwestern foot of the edifice (the Kompirayama and Nishiyama Craters). We observed the eruptive activity remotely using infrared (IR) thermal camera imagery taken from a helicopter, and filmed in the field and broadcast via the Internet supported by a television company. IR images taken from a helicopter showed that the temperature of the eruption plumes was about several tens of degrees Celsius at the base, which was lower than those observed during similar phreatic to magmato-phreatic eruptions at Usu in 1944 or the Miyakejima 2000 activity. Automated software was developed to monitor temporal variations in the number of IR image pixels showing high temperatures, which corresponded to the eruption plumes from each vent group. This measure acted as a proxy for the amount of eruptive material being released from the craters. The Kompirayama Craters showed gently varying levels of plume activity, mostly of greater magnitudes than that of the Nishiyama Craters. However, every few hours the Nishiyama Craters greatly increased their activity levels for a few minutes. At short time scales (a few tens of minutes) the two vent groups showed a negative relationship between their activity levels. Theoretical models are presented to explain the observed trends. The IR analysing system developed here is fully automated and could be used to remotely monitor and quantify activity variations at other volcanic locations. | |||||
