A rubidium vapour magnetometer was operated at the top of Mt. Minakamiyama during the period from November 1966 to February 1967. Time variations in the field gradient over 100m were observed. In order to eliminate the electric railway noises, magnetic variations were averaged during the period from one hour before to one hour after the earthquakes. Although random noises were reduced to the level less than 0.03γ, no marked variations that might be associated with earthquake occurrences were recognized. Extremely local variations were noted in the field difference between the points of 100m distance at the time of externally applied magnetic disturbances such as bays, diurnal variations and magnetic storms.
