内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 At present – when Religious Studies has already been established as an independent discipline in the academic system – to write its history belongs to one of conventional and introductory ways to depict how its theories and methods have been elaborated. Thereby, it seems that a certain type of discourse has been dominant since 1970’s: a “scientific” study of religions was supposedly urged and fostered by its two “fathers,” Friedrich Max Müller, and Cornelis Petrus Tiele, in the second half of the 19th century, while a theological shift was made from the beginning of the 20th century on by so-called phenomenologists of religion, culminating in G. van der Leeuw’s Religionsphänomenologie. In this paper, an attempt will be made to give an impetus to reconsider such a popularized and standardized historiography in terms of the historical development of the discipline, by exemplarily re-examining C. P. Tiele’s design about godsdienstwetenschap, illustrating that it appeared in the midst of controversies on the future course of the higher education system (i.e. a status of theology), and also in the context of emerging Liberal Protestantism (modernisme) in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th century, so that it will become clear that Tiele’s godsdienstwetenschap can be regarded as a product – neither a by-product nor a spin-off – of Liberal Protestant religiosity, as was also the case with F. M. Müller’s Science of Religion. Although Tiele’s Liberal-Protestant theology stood in close connection with his Remonstrant background, the strong stress on the “scientific” character of his godsdienstwetenschap rather resulted directly from both the historical and critical methods of Liberal Theology, and his Liberal Protestant inclination to see the ideal and perfect manifestation of “religion” per se just in the Liberal Protestant form of Christianity, which was considered a persuasive conclusion based on theological, i.e. “scientific” researches. By examining the involvement of this liberal-theological framework of thinking in Tiele’s concept of godsdienstwetenschap, especially in his understanding on the relationship between godsdienstwetenschap and dogmatics, this paper aims to relativize the popular historiography maintaining the “scientific” origins of Religious Studies, and accordingly to reconsider the religio-historical contextuality of its early days.
