内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to explore the early history of the cognitive science of religion (CSR), by describing the development of its theories and its academic contributions. Over the past decade, scholarly interest in CSR has significantly increased and the field has become better recognized. Emerging within the discipline of religious studies, CSR was distinctive in its systematic methodology and its interdisciplinary nature, which led CSR to develop into a new field of study independent of the study of religion. It is worthwhile, therefore, to identify who founded CSR and how it was developed. For that purpose, the paper will describe the initial development of CSR by introducing researches and academic cooperation in the period from the 1990s to the early 2000s. E. Thomas Lawson, Robert McCauley, Pascal Boyer, and Harvey Whitehouse published works concerning cognitive theories for the study of religion in the early 1990s. All of them applied cognitive science to the study of religion. They thought the CSR theories could be proven through experiments and therefore, conducted psychological experiments accordingly. They formed a research association, which included Justin L. Barrett, Ilkka Pyysiäinen and Luther H. Martin, who also shared the same interest. They held workshops and research conferences several times in the USA, the UK, and Finland. After some period of discussion, CSR was introduced into the academic world in the beginning of the 2000s. At that time, CSR was understood as “a scientific and explanatory endeavor that draws on findings from the various sciences of mind.” In this way, CSR was founded; it integrates religious studies, cognitive science, anthropology, and psychology into a novel field. In recent years CSR becomes more interdisciplinary and the diversity of studies within CSR has been increasing.
