Japanese larch and Todo fir exhibited good performance at low-to mid-altitudes but they suffered from severe damage at high-altitudes. We found that two native conifers Picea jezoensis and P. glehnii, and one larch hybrid (Larix gmelini x kaempferi) were suitable for planting in high-altitudinal zones in the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest. To recover native forests, two spruce species would be suitable for planting in these zones. P. glehnii was the most promising species for planting in higher altitudinal zones (c.a. \u003e1,000 m alt.).
