Don) leaf litter was studied for 5 years by comparing the amount of nutrients in the throughfall and water flowing out from the litter put on the forest floor of the same tree species. Loss of nutrients was generally higher in the summer. About 55% of calcium was lost in the first year, which corresponded to the L and F1 stage of decomposition. Elution of calcium continued without much fluctuation until the end of the experiment. The elution pattern of magnesium was similar to that of calcium, but the initial loss from the litter was much higher. About 73% was lost in the first year. The difference was suggested to be due to the difference of the amount of calcium and magnesium in the litter. Most of the potassium was lost at a very early period, suggesting that the loss was related to leaching rather than decomposition. On the other hand, phosphorus was lost mainly in the summer, suggesting that its loss was closely related to decomposition.
