内容記述 | By analyzing some attested examples of inanimate-subject passives in ancient Japanese and critically examining some of the concepts that have played key roles in the analysis of inanimate-subject passives, this paper argues that inanimate-subject passives in ancient Japanese can and should be classified into two semantic types: those equivalent to animate-subject passives and inanimate-subject passives in the strict sense of the term. Those equivalent to animate-subject passives, which express psychological affectedness experienced by the personified referent of the subject, should be treated as animate-subject passives. Inanimate-subject passives in the strict sense of the term, on the other hand, portray the action performed by an agent as something that happens to (i.e., something that physically affects) the referent of the subject. |
