内容記述 | This study overviews literature about how the work-family conflict issue has been solved or unsolved for women in Singapore. The Singapore government has taken active steps to remedy the issue, such as the use of foreign domestic workers and increased childcare centres. Thus, there are some academics which conclude that the conflict merely exists among Singaporean women. Nevertheless, Singapore is still confronting an ultra-low fertility rate. Furthermore, there are considerable percentages of women who leave or change their jobs after their children commence schools. This study reveals that these tendencies stem from two foundational values in Singapore; meritocracy and familialism. A meritocratic competitive system, combined with gender biased familialism, mothers have to dedicate their time to educate their children sometimes in exchange for their own career aspiration. The goal of this study is to examine this contradictory structure to show the necessity of further research into the struggles and dilemma Singaporean women may have. Answering this question will provide rich policy implications for Japan, which is trying to increase child care options to increase women in the workforce though pushing familialism at the same time. | |||||
