We propose a study of EFL School Grammar in Japan by retracing its history. Examining various grammar books used from 1850s to the end of 1890s, this paper discovers that there are several grammatical concepts which are thought to have originated in Japan: Causative Verbs, Verbs of Perception, Complete/Partial Negation, Formal Subject/Object, Subjunctive Past Perfect, Sense-Subject and Participial Construction. By analyzing the historical process in which these new items were created and systematized, the paper unveils the grammarians'uniform and consistent orientation toward linguistic meaning. This finding enables us to see partly what the whole grammatical system is truly about.
