The Qinggui Xuanmiao is a monastic code edited by Taoist priests led by Min Lanyun, who was born in the Wuxing prefecture, Zhejiang, in the mid-18th century. Other codes, such as the Quanzhen Xuzhi, published by the Taiqing Gong temple in 1937, and the Quanzhen Qinggui, published by the Mission division of the Qingsong Guan temple, Kowloon, Hong-kong, in 1972, were under the influence of the Qinggui Xuanmiao. Min Lanyun, concerning whose birth a mysterious legend is known, was constitutionally weak and had difficulty in walking. After he was initiated into the Chongdao Guan temple of the Jingai mountain, where he was instructed in daoyin (breathing) method by the head of the temple, he became healthy and led an asoetic life. Later he got a position in the Yunnan province government, following his father's wish, but after the parents'death he returned to the Jingai mountain and devoted himself to ascetic practice and traning his disciples. Meanwhile, he esteblished a monastic code about monastic priests'daily life and practice, on the basis of the rough plan made by a priest Wang Changyue. This code, which we know as the Qinggui Xuanmiao, reflects the prominent feature of the Quan-zhen jiao (Teaching of Complete Perfection) to which he belonged, that is the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. In addition, the Qinggui Xuanmiao prescribes severe punishment for a violation of the code, and this is thought to be a reason that the Quan-zhen jiao priests are well-disciplined, unlike those in other sects. Therefore, the Qinggui Xuanmiao is a book important to study the quality of the Quan-zhen jiao.
