The purpose of this study is to review the implementation status of education for reconstruction (ER) after the Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster based on a questionnaire survey on “Iwate Education for Reconstruction” and to discuss its implications for school-based reforms. Research results are as follows. First, all public elementary and middle schools in Iwate prefecture implement ER, and their activities are quite diverse ranging from education for protections against disasters to that for resilience. Second, most schools set ER as a core goal and develop ER annual plans. Third, ER is acknowledged to give mostly positive influences to children in such areas as understanding disasters and importance of lives. Fourth, although ER could become an additional burden on teachers, it could also provide them with opportunities to exercise ingenuity and cooperate with other teachers. Fifth, mutual understanding among teachers and discretionary budget are considered as important conditions for implementing ER, and this would be true of school-based reforms generally.
