Intense aftershock activity immediately after the main shock has been revealed by the playback of a magnetic tape recorded at the HATA station, epicentral distance being about 100km. Many large aftershocks (M>4) occurred during a 70 minute period after the main shock. These aftershock activities would be caused by violent crustal activation, produced by the main shock faulting.
