The Mindanao tsunami was generated hear the Philippioe trench, accompanying the earthquake of magnitude Ms=7.4 (NOAA), at 00h 20m (GMT), Dec. 2, 1972. Somefeatures of this tsunami are investigated on the basis of tide gauge records observed along the Japanese coast. Wave amplitudes along the coast of SW Japan are relatively high due to the effect of direction of the island arc and amount to 40-50cm with the period of about 15 min. According to the author's method, based on the attenuation of tsunami height with distance, the magnitude of the present tsunami is m=1.5-2. The computed travel times agree well with the observed values. The wave group of the maximum amplitude observed 3 to 8 hours after the arrival of the initial wave can be explained by the effect of edge waves.
