In this paper I trace the life and activity of Eduard Tisse, a Soviet cinematographer, who is well known for his collaboration with Sergei Eisenstein, and his role in developing Eisenstein’s theory of montage. Although Tisse was one of the greatest cinematographers of revolutionary films, little attention has been paid to his contribution. I demonstrate his technique by focusing on the creation of the shadow effect which emphasizes the emotional tension in revolutionary films: ¡Qué viva México! (1931) and In the Mountains of Yugoslavia (1945). I argue that these works filmed in two foreign countries, Mexico and the former Yugoslavia, clearly reflect Tisse’s tonal composition which illustrates the tensed conflict and the expression of darkness that foregrounds the native people’s strong intention for the Communist resistance.
