This research aims at analyzing cohabitation in Anna Karenina (1877) and A Certain Woman (1919). Cohabitation is viewed as a specific space shared by the protagonists and sometimes their family members or relatives. The methodology of this research is to apply the idea of Todorov (Todorov, 1995) about accomplishment and recognition in order to attempt a more clear view on the way cohabitation exists and the relationship that the cohabitants are having. In the case of Anna Karenina the world of the cohabitation is brought into existence by several "crises" and its end is caused by humiliation and pity. In A Certain Woman the attachment to the life before cohabitation and the impossibility to build up a world for only the two protagonists proves the cause for the failure of their relationship.
