The present study illustrates teaching materials utilizing an English movie in an English classroom in a university, and how students use the elements of the movie such as the imagery or the sounds to understand and produce English expressions that are appropriate in certain contexts. The teaching materials were designed for four experimental lessons, which included some activities that require students to use their pragmatic knowledge. Through analyzing the students' comments left on the questionnaire surveys and worksheets, we found that the imagery and the sounds give them various types of information such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and the atmosphere of the scene, which help them grasp the contextual meanings and create appropriate English expressions. The results also showed that they worked on the activities using those elements of the movie by understanding the characters’ feelings, understanding and imagining the contents of the story, noticing the variety of English expressions, and predicting English expressions when they encountered words that they did not know.
