The aim of this paper is to outline highly important segmental features of vocabulary Items treated in four-year foreign language education in elementary schools. In this paper, firstly, the objectives and contents of English pronunciation teaching and some notes about vocabulary Items in the new course of study in 2020 are confirmed. Secondly, the problems about English pronunciation of native Japanese speakers are indicated and /r/, /l/, /s, z/, /f, v/, /θ, ð/, /w/, aspiration of /p, t, k/, /æ/, and /ɪ/ are defined as the phonemes that should be taught from the perspective of “intelligibility” and “teachability” by reviewing previous experimental studies. Thirdly, it becomes clear that the /r/, /l/, /f, v/, and /ɪ/ sounds and aspiration are included in more than 100 words and phrases within 449 vocabularies of “WORD LIST” in new textbooks, We can! 1 and 2. Based on this result, finally, concrete ways to teach these phonemes in elementary schools are proposed.
