This paper focuses on the particle maa which has various usages in the discourse of Japanese. After examining previous studies, the author proposes a common basis of these usages. It is an ongoing process in which both the speaker and a listener (or others) take part. When the speaker wants to stop this process, maa introduces an utterance in order to stop this process and start new one. According to the types of this process, the meaning of maa is divided into four usages: the maa of soothing, the maa of blurring, the assertive maa and the maa of the discourse structure.
