Le « mythe hamletien » s’est formé à l’époque romantique. Durant celle-ci, la pièce d’Hamlet est considérée comme le chef-d’oeuvre d’un genie, Shakespeare. Du reste, Mallarmé assiste à la version réduite d’Alexandre Dumas, écrivain romantique. Le poète, qui perçoit ce mythe, se questionne alors sur son hérédité. Cet article remonte, tout d’abord, à la source du « mythe hamletien », afin de retracer la réception d’Hamlet en France, de l’époque romantique jusqu’à la fin du XIXe siècle, notamment à travers les comédiens qui ont joué Hamlet. Cette recherche poursuit, ensuite, avec l’analyse de « Note sur le théâtre », texte de Mallarmé au sujet d’Hamlet. Finalement, nous mettons en lumière la reception mallarméenne de cette représentation d’Hamlet. Pour Mallarmé, Hamlet n’exprimerait plus ses émotions, mais hésiterait entre être et non-être, dans « le suspens d’un acte ».
