De fait, chez Sand, l'on voit mis en vedette non seulement le héros Albertus mais aussi Hélène, l'héroïne autonome qui s'engage dans une quête de la vérité indépendamment de la volonté de son maître, tandis que dans Faust, Manfred et les Aïeux, c'est principalement l'aventure spirituelle du héros, et non celle de l'héroïne, qui est pleinement mise en scène. Particularité d'autant plus à souligner qu'elle distingue Les Sept Cordes aussi bien du trio des drames fantastiques que des autres textes du même type publiés dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle : Caïn, Nicolas Flamel, Ahasvérus...
