Dans l'antiquité grecque, le signe (σεμειον) était analysé dans le domaine philosophique, et divisé en deux parties, c'est-à-dire «signifiant (σεμαινον) / signifié (σεμαινομενον)». La théorie d'Augustin a succédé à la semiologie grecque, mais chez Augustin, l'objet de l'analyse passe de l'énoncé au mot. Il a, ensuite, proposé la notion d'une paire «verbum / nomen», qui s'associent et forment ainsi le nouvel objet, le signe en tant que signe linguistique. En outre cette nouvelle paire s'est élevée à l'idée intellectuelle formée par les deux parties «sensible / intelligible», une seule partie n'étant pas suffisante pour que les hommes se comprennent.
