Analysis in this paper shows that the production and exports of dry beans reflect reverse trends from those in China’s domestic grain market. The surplus of grain in northeast China led to the shift of productive capacity from major grains to dry beans; thus, fostering the rapid growth of exports in the dry bean industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, since 2010, the recent grain boom has brought obstacles hindering further growth of dry bean exports and, at the same time, the surplus of major grain is shrinking.
