Communitarians, including Michael Sandel, criticized John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice, focusing the concept of “unencumbered self”. Even though Rawls had made some theoretical concessions, Sandel continued to criticize his theory of justice: Freedom of choice, pursued to its end, not only hiders the cultivation of virtuous citizens, but erodes spiritual foundations of liberalism. The paper tries to analyze Sandel’s criticism toward Rawls and consider whether it really challenged the essence of Rawls’ theory.
