Little is known, however, of the actual details of their working hours and the effects of the differences in their work status and family structure on their lives. This article sets out to examine the actual working hours of Japanese female physicians, and to determine how they are affected by their work status and family structures through a secondary analysis of government statistics (the Labour Force Survey). The results show that part-time female physicians tend to work much shorter hours - about 20 hours less- than their full-time counterparts, controlling for other factors, including family structures. Although their shorter working hours can be attributed to other unobserved factors, such as the availability of child care, the working conditions of part-time physicians are one reason for such short working hours.
