It shows that ratio of plants/facilities which resorted to voluntary severance or other measures of redundancies, ratio of separation for business reasons and unemployment rate increased and participation rate declined drastically. Although there was significant reduction of working hours, it is undeniable that unprecedented size of redundancies occured afer 1997-8. It is difficult to decide whether those changes mean a radical departure from the so-called \"\"Japanese-style employment systems\"\" strongly associated with the \"\"Lifetiem Employment\"\" ideology or they are just the results of normal responses of the system to changed economic environment.
