In this paper, we aim to reconstruct dugout-fishing as an ethnoarchaeological study based on the interview survey of fishermen who used dugout for fishing until recently. Our survey area is northern Tohoku region where small wooden boats, generally called ‘Mudamahagi’, are widely used. The first informant is a boatbuilder of Shiranuka area, Higashidori village located on Shimokita Peninsula. His interview reveals that semi-dugout canoe locally called ‘Isobune’ is used for shoreline fishing (‘Iso-mawari’) while plank canoe locally called ‘Shimaihagi’ is for offshore fishing. The second informant is a fisherman who uses dugout for fishing based at Toga area of Oga Peninsula. He uses two kinds of canoes for different purposes: dugout canoe for shoreline fishing around Toga bay and plank canoe (‘Tenma-sen’) for offshore fishing. According to the second informant, a dugout canoe is steered by one or two males, and it is preferentially used in the rough sea fishing of winter season because it is much heavier and stabler than the other types. Dugout canoe is also used in Tomari area of Rokkasho village on Shimokita, and it corresponds to Oga’s case with two characteristics: mainly used for shoreline fishing; and heavier weight with thick bottom.
