At all sites, the snail populations survived the mega-tsunami in 2011 despite decreases in snail density. Changes among the genetic characteristics of each local population were verified based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites analyses. Analysis of the mitochondrial DNA revealed a decrease in genetic diversity among local populations at the mouth of the Origasa River and Ogatsu Bay, as well as a shift in the dominant sequence type found in Hitsugaura Lagoon. In contrast, microsatellite analysis revealed no genetic changes among local populations.
