It has reviewed previous studies on social studies education in Africa conducted by African researchers and identified that teachers are expected to possess four types of expertise. That is, social studies teachers are expected to be able to (1) teach general social studies including geography, history, and civics, (2) deal with controversial issues, (3) translate curriculum or interpret syllabus, and (4) conduct action researches.
