In many countries, the pandemic has had a severe impact on the higher education sector. In particular, American higher education has been severely affected by the pandemic. Many people consider the American higher education model the gold standard of higher education. It is necessary to examine why the American model is so vulnerable to the epidemic. We hypothesize that the American model is particularly susceptible because it utilizes various opportunities that make higher education resourceful and the pandemic suddenly nullified most of these opportunities. In this preliminary report, we examine the happenings in American colleges and universities after March 2020 and clarify how the federal government is attempting to financially help these institutions. Subsequently, we identify two topics that have been forcefully changed by the pandemic. First, almost all colleges and universities changed their policies to accept international students. Second, the residential life of undergraduate students completely changed suddenly following pandemic occurrence.
