After defining the preposition l- “to” as a dative maker, I classify the uses of the dative in this language into two kinds: the verbal dative and the sentential dative. While the verbal dative constitutes a verbal argument, the sentential dative does not, instead modifying the sentence containing it. The sentential dative has two subgroups: the dative of the affectee and the presentative dative (the ethical dative). The latter part of the paper is devoted to the description of the three major meanings of the dative of the affectee: the adversity reading, the benefactive reading, and the impact of the event.
