After showing the phoneme inventory and the syllable structure of the Uchinoura dialect, the author reports that the syllable plays a phonologically important role in this dialect. It is revealed that (i) the Uchinoura dialect has no diphthongs but approximant /j/ in the syllable-final position and (ii) syllable-initial approximants /j, w/ fill the glide slot regardless of the existence of another onset consonant.
