This paper analyzes two aspects of this problem: (1) Synchronically, there are both the phenomenon which suggests the phonological form of [jɪ] is ye and the phenomenon which suggests the phonological form [jɪ] is yi, and consequently it is better considered as an example of neutralization of the phonemes e and i before the word-initial [j]. (2) Diachronically, both Sibe wordinitial [jɪ] and [ʔi] mainly descend from Classical Manchu i or e.
