After introducing the hierarchy, I claim that the N-semantic analysis based on the notion of a variable noun phrase fails to capture a significant generalization because it cannot account for cases where the value of the higher-level variable does not contain a variable. I go on to show that RFT can not only account for what N-semantics has revealed about the hierarchy but also accommodate some new data that are not covered by the N-semantic analysis.
