To this end, I review previous studies in three phases (early, middle, and late) and follow the progress of the studies to date. In order to clarify the structure of the problems dealt with in theories of truth, which have been discussed among Mīmāṃsakas, Buddhist logicians, and Naiyāyikas, an attempt is made to order the basic concepts such as prāptabādha, utsarga and apavāda, the opposition between utpattitaḥand jñaptitaḥ, and the main underlying assumptions. Next, in order to clarify the historical development of the post-Kumālila theories of truth, I examine the historical developments among the various theorists of Mīmāṃsā (Umbeka, Sucarita and Pārthasārathi), the Buddhist school of logic (Devendrabuddhi, Śākyabuddhi, Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla), and the school of Nyāya (Jayanta). In this paper, I try to explain the process of exchange of arguments by Indian authors of different schools and to show the concrete aspects of the historical development of the arguments. By taking into account the critiques from the school of Buddhist logic, I trace the development of theory after Kumārila.
