This paper focuses on what could be one of the most controversial uses of this semantic role, i.e., its assignment to the subjects of some causative sentences in Japanese. To address the problems arising from representative accounts that invoke the experiencer role (or something akin to it), the present paper highlights some of the key features of this particular type of causative and shows how it should be analyzed in light of these features.
