Fathersays he can’t tie his tie.” “Why can’t he tie it for himself?”(「お母さま,ちょっとこちらへ来てくださる?お父さまがネクタイを結べないって」「どうして自分で結べないの」)のように「自分(の力)で」の意を表すことができる。この用法のfor X-self に関して,従来,「X のためになる,X にとって利益になる」というニュアンスを含むという説明が提示されてきた。しかし,for X-self はCome and see foryourself. Not that it’ll do you any good.(こっち来て自分の目で確かめてみなよ。まあ見たところで何にもならないけど)やI saw it for myself and I wish I hadn’t.(私はそれを自分の目で見てしまった。見なければよかったと後悔している)のようにX にとっての利益を明示的に否定するような英文の中で用いてもまったくもって自然であることから,「ためになる」説に十分な説明能力があるとは言えない。これに対して本稿は,for X-self は「本来X が行うべきことを他の人が代わりに行う」という状況を対比の相手とし,これを否定する意味を持つと主張する。つまり「本来X が行うべきことを他の人が代わりに行うのではなく,本来通りX 自身が行う」ということである。この分析が正しいとしたら,for X-self という形を取りながらも「for [X 以外の人] なのかfor [X 自身] なのか」という風にfor の目的語の位置で対立が起こっているのではなく,「X 以外の人がするのかX がするのか」という風に行為の主体(典型的には文の主語)の部分で対立が起こっていることになり,ある種のねじれが発生していることになるが,これと類似したねじれはfor X-self に限らずX’s own N やV X-self にも観察されるため,英語の体系の中に自然な形で位置付けられる現象であると言える。本稿では,「ためになる」説が支持されてきた理由の考察や,これまで提案されてきた「ためになる」説以外の説の検証も行う。","subitem_description_language":"ja","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"},{"subitem_description":"The present article is an attempt to describe the meaning of for oneself (henceforth for X-self) in utterances such as “Mother, would you come here, please? Father says he can’t tie his tie.” “Why can’t he tie it for himself?”. While there has been a long tradition of ascribing to the phrase benefactive overtones that derive from the corresponding sense of the preposition for (e.g., They sang for each other), this analysis cannot be maintained, considering that for X-self can be used in utterances that explicitly state that no benefit is realized (e.g., I saw it for myself and I wish I hadn’t) or intended (e.g., Come and see for yourself. Not that it’ll do you any good) for the X-denoted person. A more convincing line of argument would be that when a speaker says X does something for X-self, she is saying that X does it themselves because they are supposed to, rather than having someone else do it for them (for here is used in the ‘on behalf of’ sense, not the ‘for the benefit of’ sense). In putting forward this hypothesis I am proposing that the contrast the user of for X-self has in mind is along the lines of ‘X does it vs. someone else does it’, rather than ‘for X vs. for someone else’. This rather quirky state of affairs is observed for other expressions such as X’s own N and V X-self as well, suggesting that the present account is not so ad hoc in nature as some might think it is. This article also includes discussion on the possible reasons why the ‘benefactive’ analysis has long been accepted without question, as well as on the validity of other analyses provided in the literature.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_4_description_6":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論文 Articles","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_4_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15083/0002005840","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_4_publisher_20":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"東京大学大学院人文社会系研究科・文学部言語学研究室","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"Department of Linguistics, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, Faculty of Letters, The University of Tokyo","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_4_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10148796","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_4_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"13458663","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_4_text_4":{"attribute_name":"著者所属","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_text_language":"ja","subitem_text_value":"慶應義塾大学"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorAffiliations":[{"affiliationNames":[{"affiliationName":"慶應義塾大学","affiliationNameLang":"ja"}]}],"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"平沢, 慎也","creatorNameLang":"ja"},{"creatorName":" Hirasawa, Shinya","creatorNameLang":"en"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2022-11-17"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"ggr_e044002.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.6 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://repository.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/record/2005840/files/ggr_e044002.pdf"},"version_id":"077ff0a9-bf2a-4eba-9444-3f37d0ce27ee"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"前置詞","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"for","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"for oneself","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"one’s own","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"再帰代名詞","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"受益・恩恵","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"対比","subitem_subject_language":"ja","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"reciprocal pronoun benefactive","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"contrast","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"「自分で」を表す for oneself : 「自分のためになる」の意味を含むというのは本当か","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"「自分で」を表す for oneself : 「自分のためになる」の意味を含むというのは本当か","subitem_title_language":"ja"}]},"item_type_id":"4","owner":"1","path":["1668648028832","1668648192268"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2022-11-17"},"publish_date":"2022-11-17","publish_status":"0","recid":"2005840","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["「自分で」を表す for oneself : 「自分のためになる」の意味を含むというのは本当か"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2022-12-19T05:18:53.927215+00:00"}
