Comparing this phenomenon with Written Tibetan (WrT), which reflects an ancient sound form, we find that the glide /r/ corresponds to WrT subscript r. This sound correspondence shows that the Phongpa dialect, to some extent, maintains an archaic feature, and it is arguable which position the Phongpa dialect occupies within the modern dialects. This article primarily discusses the sound correspondence of the WrT ‘vowel+final consonant’ form with the Phongpa dialect in comparison to that of other surrounding dialects. By doing so, the article elucidates shared innovations between Phongpa and other varieties.
