The number of nature reserves has increased and often overlap with the residential areas of indigenous people who have traditionally practised slash-and-burn agriculture and hunting, leading to disputes between the management authorities and local people, and calling into question the effectiveness of nature reserve management. the YingGeLing Nature Reserve (YNR) in Hainan Province initiated a policy of employing a large number of local indigenous people as frontline forest rangers in the management of nature reserves in traditional indigenous residential areas, as an advanced approach to nature reserve management. The aim of this study is to summarise the achievements and problems of the YNR’s forest ranger system and to gain knowledge for use in future nature reserve management. The results of the study showed that there is a gap in awareness between the management bodies and the indigenous forest rangers, and that the problems will not be solved unless financial guarantees and a fair evaluation of the rangers’ work are satisfied.
