Sasaki views picture books as important on the basis of the Soviet psychology that she has studied since her student days and her creative interpretations of this perspective. Specifically, she evaluates picture books as helping infants inherit the history of the human spirit and culture and as instruments that encourage the development of verbal thinking and non-verbal sensitivity-skills that are specific to humans. Previous studies pointed out that the 1960s and 1970s in Japan were periods when Soviet psychological research on thinking processes was actively translated and, at the same time, when picture books began to take root in the home and in preschool.
