This study examined the theoretical background of thinking dispositions in terms of their role, meaning, and educational methods. Research trends in Japan were also reviewed. The analysis revealed that the major theories shared the view that dispositions orientate thinking and can be acquired and developed. However, significant differences were found in terms of the elements of dispositions, perceptions of universality and their relationship to abilities and skills. Most studies dealing with dispositions in Japan used psychological methods in the context of critical thinking. It should be noted that there is little discussion on the meaning and nature of the concept of thinking dispositions.
